General Reading Strategies

GENERAL READING STRATEGIES FOR CONTENT AREA CLASSES



Before Reading:

*Identify what you know about the topic.  List specific ideas from your prior knowledge/schema.
*Write specific questions you would like answered.
*Make specific predictions about what you think you will learn.
*Preview the selection with attention to bold print, captions, and graphics.

During Reading:

*Generate mental pictures about what you are reading. Visualize!
*Make connections.  Text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world.
*Summarize what you have just read.
*Try to answer the questions you asked.  Ask more questions.
*Alter your predictions. Infer.
*Identify items or facts that are confusing.

After Reading:

*Create a final summary of what you have learned.
*State how you can use the information you have learned.
*Revisit text for clarification.
*Respond to questions.
*Synthesize what you’ve read.
